Here’s a tricky one. Let’s take five flicks, although the last is just there…because? Doubt, Julie and Julia, The Devil Wears Prada, Sunshine Cleaning and (here is the because) It’s Complicated.

Now, take a look at a couple of actors: Meryl Streep, Amy Adams, Emily Blunt, Stanley Tucci, and Mary Kay Place. While not all five were in movies together in one place at the same time, they all over lap from 2 in one movie to 4. Top spot goes to Meryl, Amy, Stanley and Mary Kay (even though we just heard her voice as Amy’s – Julie’s – mom) in Julie and Julia.

Travel back one year with Doubt and Meryl and Amy, on screen together vs never actually working directly together in J and J. Step another year back in time travel and we have The Devil Wears Prada with Meryl, Stanley Tucci and finally Emily Blunt making her appearance in this blog all working for Meryl in the movie. Returning back to the age of J and J, Sunshine Cleaning is staring Amy Adams and Emily Blunt as sisters. A bit of an aside: Meryl and Anne Hathaway in Prada together, both tied for the Broadcast Critics award in 2009, that following year for different movies. Ah and that last little film; It’s Complicated with Meryl and Mary Kay Place; both voice and body.

It all sparked with Julie and Julia. Not my idea to blog, but all the information that flooded my mind as I watched, clicked in harmony with my memories of fact and observation. Some obvious, some not. Firstly, I was amazed that my best friend did not realize that Amy Adams (neither one of us saw Junebug, but that is on my list.) was one of the nuns in Doubt. As proven, that was some feat of acting. Meryl and Amy were in that intense gem together – although technically it can be said that they really never worked together in Julie & Julia. Which takes us to Meryl and Stanley Tucci (her husband, Paul Child) who happened to be her assistant in The Devil Wears Prada. On another note, Mr. Tucci is an avid lover of food as is apparent in the wonderful Indie film The Big Night – a film of love from him and frequent co-worker and friend Tony Shaloub. Then there is the cute and witted Chris Messina, who plays Julie Powell’s (Amy Adams) husband. He was in Vicki Christina Barcelona, the movie that aided the Penelope Cruz win for the Oscar for best supporting actress. She happened to be vying for the award against Amy Adams for her role in Doubt. Although Ms. Adams was predicted to get her Oscar for Junebug, there was some talk, after turning in her subtle and startling performance in Doubt, she could win – hence, against someone who was in the movie with the man that played her husband in Julie & Julie. Is that two or three degrees? Now I am not sure where Jane Lynch of current Glee fame fits in except what an incredible performance? If she had only had one more scene…could have made her major film mark. (ok, I just added her because I really like her Dorothy McWilliams turn as Julia’s sister) For those who have good voice recognition, Julie’s mom on the phone is played by Mary Kaye Place, Emmy award winner for Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman. I suppose I would have known her voice even though right before I saw the movie, I was checking on upcoming Meryl Streep movies and she happens to be in the next one, It’s Complicated.
